Emotions Are Like Food, They Need To Be Digested
Can you imagine swallowing a whole apple without chewing it because you want to avoid the pain of a tooth ache? Whilst it might fulfill your hunger it is certainly going to do some damage to your digestive system because it missed an important part of the process.
Digesting emotions are no different. Instead of taking the time to chew through the emotion and feel the sensation associated with it, we often try to move to the next step and search for a solution to avoid the discomfort that the emotion presents.
The risk with this is when emotions are not fully processed, just like the apple, they become stuck and cause pain in our bodies.
In fact poor digestion of emotions lead to anxiety, anger, sadness or a complete emotional disconnection and we often develop reactive behaviours to protect us from feeling anything associated with them.
In order for us to have effective emotional processing, we need to allow our emotions and feel what needs to be felt. Stop trying to jump to the next step in the process by looking for ways to "feel better", being human is not about feeling happy, it's about feeling everything. Ironically, when you actually allow the full processing of an emotion you will naturally feel better anyway, because you won't have anything weighing you down.
The SDH technique can help you tap into your somatic nervous system and will teach you how to respect and surrender to your emotions by allowing whatever needs to be felt to move through your body.
